Brian & Jan Townsend, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, joined Primerica to make a better life for themselves and their family. They’ve made a career out of helping to change lives in their community. But recently, they experienced first‑hand the power of what Primerica does for families.

“About two‑and‑a‑half years ago, my brother purchased term life insurance through Primerica,” recalls Jan. “Then, this past November, he was diagnosed with advanced acute leukemia. We were in shock at first – that’s something that happens to a stranger not to a family member! Then other thoughts came to the forefront, like ‘Thank goodness he’s covered with life insurance.’”

Brian and Jan were in the middle of a big push to move up in the business, to the Regional Vice President (RVP) level when the diagnosis came in. “November was the first month of our run to RVP,” explains Jan. “We were still working toward our advancement when my brother started his treatment in December. He became violently ill and nearly died. During that time, I spent many, many hours at the hospital. But, I also logged the most hours ever out in the field helping families and across the kitchen table on appointments.”

She continues, “This business is structured in such a way that despite the fact that we were away from the day‑to‑day of our business while we dealt with my brother’s illness, our business still grew and we still stayed on track for our RVP advancement. If we’d have continued with the telecommunications business we owned and operated before Primerica, we never would have been able to have been away for so long. I’d have been going insane with wanting to be at the hospital but not being able to. But at Primerica, we have total freedom to do what we need to for our family while not missing a step with our business growth.”

Now, several months later, Jan’s brother is in remission and preparing for a bone marrow transplant. “Blood siblings have only a 25% chance of being a perfect donor match and I happen to be one of that small percentage,” smiles Jan. “I feel so fortunate that I can help him – and, once again, because of our Primerica business, I’ll be able to travel to Seattle, WA, with him for nearly three weeks to have the procedure done. We are so glad that we have the flexibility to still build our business and earn an income even when life happens!”

Primerica has teamed up with bTrade LLC, a leader in multi-platform Managed File Transfer (MFT) solutions, to monitor and control the movement of critical corporate data, reduce security risk, and improve IT as well as business efficiency.

“With data breaches occurring, organizations must have the right Managed File Transfer solution in place when transferring sensitive information,” says David Wade, Primerica’s CIO. “bTrade’s TDAccess is a secure, scalable and intuitive file transfer solution that has been easily integrated into our existing infrastructure.”

TDAccess provides Primerica with a data communications software solution that easily links business applications and processes to a variety of Primerica’s products such as life insurance, investments, loans and long term care insurance. TDAccess automatically performs data compression/decompression, which allows Primerica to easily manage large volumes of data transmissions from their independent representatives. Now more than ever, data security is essential for financial services companies, and the advanced cryptography in TDAccess provides Primerica the security it needs.

“The requirements of today’s financial institutions are constantly changing and security is always a top priority,” said Steve Zapata, President and CEO of bTrade. “As a result, many financial companies, such as Primerica, are enhancing controls and choosing MFT over unsecure FTP. bTrade is committed to meeting Primerica’s demand for solutions that deliver security and efficiency – with visibility throughout the process.”

If you ask any Primerica representative, they’ll probably tell you a million ways that this business has changed their life. But for Gerald Verghese & Lisa Yee, of Kirkland, Quebec, what stands out the most is how their Primerica business gave them the freedom to be there for their family – at a time when they were needed the most.

When their two children, Gabriel and Gracianne, were young, each developed life threatening illnesses that have kept the young family in and out of the hospital for the last 10 years.

When Gabriel was born, he was diagnosed with severe reflux and esophagitis. For nearly a year, Gerald and Lisa had to feed him a special high calorie, hypoallergenic formula through a feeding tube. Fast forward a few years and the family was just beginning to recover from that family trauma when their second child, Gracianne was born. “By her second birthday, we knew something was wrong,” says Lisa. “She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It was our second time going through the shock of emergency room visits and constant medical management of our child.”

For a lot of people, the stress alone would be overwhelming, not to mention trying to juggle doctor visits and emergency room runs with the day to day activities of holding down a job and maintaining a home. But Gerald and Lisa both credit their Primerica “family” with getting them through the tough times. “Primerica has been an incredible blessing in our lives,” says Gerald. “Both of our kids are managing their conditions well because Lisa and I have been able to give them our time and energy. Not only that, but because we’ve built a strong foundation for our Primerica business, we’ve continued to grow in that area as well.”

He continues, “None of what we’ve been able to do for our family would have been possible if I’d stayed in my former occupation as an accountant. That 9 to 5 workday wouldn’t have accommodated our family challenges and I’d probably have lost my job and income. Because of Primerica, we have been able to make a much larger income than I ever could have before and, more importantly, this business has given us freedom and flexibility with our time.”

Today, Gabriel is 10 years old and Gracianne is five. Each still faces challenges, but they are thriving in spite of their medical issues. “I used to be a negative person who would have been angry and resentful about having two very sick children,” reflects Gerald. “But this company has surrounded us with great people who showed us how to think and act in ways that make every situation better and not worse. We’ve been able to set a great example for our kids, too, so even their doctors remark how positive and happy they are, despite their challenges!”

He adds, “Primerica has allowed us to be totally involved in every aspect of our kids lives, which has tremendously increased the quality of life for our family. This business changed our lives and we are so grateful to have found this Opportunity!”

York, AL, native and Primerica Regional Vice President, Liza Howard was honored by The University of West Alabama on Saturday, April 16. The University dedicated the Liza James Howard Courtyard in honor of Mrs. Howard being the first African American student to attend the University.

The courtyard showcased a monument to the 1969 and 1976 elementary education graduate. Personalized brick pavers were sold and surround the courtyard. The proceeds from bricks will benefit the University’s Liza J. Howard Scholarship Fund.

“This institution is pleased to honor Mrs. Howard for her many contributions to UWA and the people of Sumter County,” said UWA President Richard D. Holland.

Howard was inducted into UWA’s Society of the Golden Key in 2004, the highest honor given to a University graduate or faculty member. The National Alumni Association’s Liza J. Howard Alumni Chapter was also established in her name to honor her many accomplishments.

After teaching at Livingston Junior High School for 30 years, Mrs. Howard retired from teaching high school and joined Primerica as an independent representative. Today, she continues to her work as an educator by teaching Primerica’s clients about their finances and how to make their money work for them.

For a former office manager, freedom looks a little different than to others.

To Daniel Alonzo of Ontario, CA, freedom looks like opportunity. Daniel pictures an alternate future in which he never joined Primerica and cringes at the thought of working 9 to 5, making an average income and missing out on the chances to travel, build relationships with people all over the nation, meet new friends, get recognition for a job well done and to generally feel good about himself. Good thing he ignored his best friend when he warned him against Primerica.

That’s right. Daniel almost missed out on the opportunity that changed his life 15 years ago because of what someone told him about a business he knew nothing about. Daniel decided to try it for himself, and has been able to become a leader in the company over the span of a few years.

Relax … Or Not
Now’s the time for him to sit back and enjoy what he and his wife Karma have worked so hard for, right? Wrong. “I’m working harder than ever now, because I just don’t want to miss out on anything. Primerica is a great opportunity, and it’s an opportunity for now. It just gets better every day, and I want to be part of all the innovations and opportunities that are being created to help people,” Daniel explained.

When he joined Primerica, at 21 years old, he just wanted to make money. Now he wants to make Primerica the greatest company in the world. Of course, he added, he wants to do well for his family, but what Primerica is doing is bigger than all of us, he said. “We can help a lot of people, and there’s no reason anyone can’t succeed in making it happen.” He wants to grow new leaders, and has focused his energies into helping other people build their businesses. He’s able to do that because of the Primerica system.

He explained, “The way Primerica is set up, we’re able to build a business, but I work my own hours that are extremely flexible. The system allows me to override a sizeable organization and allows me the freedom to do what I want, when I want.”

Overcoming Fear
“It’s mindboggling to think about how many people, especially in the financial industry, have been wiped out recently. People are out of jobs, out of work … they’ve lost everything. Because of the Primerica system that allows me to build a business within a business, our incomes have remained a little more ‘recession-proof.’ We’re more insulated from big ups and dips in our income,” he clarified.

But he knows that entrepreneurship can still be a frightening concept to some people. To them, he offers this advice: If you’re achieving all your goals and dreams and you see opportunities for unlimited growth in your current job, stay where you are. If you know you want more opportunity, financial stability – more out of life, you have to give Primerica a chance. If you stay where you are, you’re going to keep getting what you have. Primerica is your chance to see what you can do.
