Now, more than ever, people are looking for ways to trim the budget while still retaining as much of their current lifestyle as possible. Auto insurance and homeowner’s insurance are two areas where a little shopping around can make a big difference in how much cash a family outlays each year.

Primerica’s auto and homeowner’s insurance referral program, Primerica Secure™, offered through Insurance Answer Center, has been a big success out in the field – and here at the home office! In fact, as part of my job as a Staff Writer in our on site Publications Department, I’ve spoken to several home office employees who gave Primerica Secure a glowing seal of approval.

Over the next few months, I’ll be highlighting some of their stories – because saving a bunch of cash on a service everyone needs is worth talking about!

A Marriage Saver
Executive Vice President Cathy Falls jokes that ditching her old insurance company for one of the Primerica Secure companies may have saved her marriage. “My husband loves cars, so we usually have at least four for just the two of us,” she explains. “Given his ‘car affliction’ as I call it, we needed to trim some money somewhere in our budget. That’s why we looked into Primerica Secure.”

Cathy and husband, David, used to be like many people – loyal to a company for the simple reason that they’d always used them for insurance. “We were with our old insurer for 24 years, but just by shopping around through Primerica Secure, we saved $1,800 a year!” enthuses Cathy.

Switching was as easy as picking up the phone – and Cathy & David couldn’t be happier. “We will definitely be recommending this program to our friends and family,” says Cathy. “Putting that much money back into our pockets is amazing!”

Stay tuned for more Primerica employees who boosted their cash in pocket just by checking out their options!

The Summer Food Drive competition at Primerica’s Home Office is a popular campaign with employees. There’s always a healthy rivalry among the departments to see who can collect the most food items for donation to the Lilburn (GA) Co-op. It’s a joy to help out this wonderful organization, which has provided all kinds of services to people who find themselves in need in the Gwinnett county area since 1994. As with every year, Primerica’s employees didn’t disappoint. With more than 4,500 food items donated, volunteers filled three SUVs and two pickup trucks for the trip back to the food pantry.

The food drive was promoted throughout the Home Office campus with a Primerican poster campaign.

The following departments contributed to Primerica’s generous effort: Publications, Insurance Business Counsel, Human Resources, PFS University, PFSU Prelicensing/Agency Relations, Facilities/Warehouse, Television, Information Technology, Securities and Lilburn Co-Op volunteers were happy to take the food for folks in need.

It’s been a tough year financially for many families due to a sluggish economy. In times like these, many people look for ways to cut costs and stash more cash to tide them over until the recession eases.

To get you started, here are three tips for boosting finances in a tough economy.

1. Make Positive Changes Last. Many surveys show that Americans are shifting their priorities in profound ways. For example, 63% say they are less materialistic, and 70% say they consider spending time with family more important than ever. Sixty three percent vow to no longer carry a credit card balance, and many are saving more – the personal savings rate has soared to 5.7%, the highest since 1995.1 Once you adopt these changes, it’s a good idea to continue them even when the economy gets better.

2. Pay With Cash or Checks. People who pay with credit or debit cards tend to: buy more things, pay a higher price for them (sometimes twice as much) and become less aware of how much they’ve spent than those who pay with cash or checks.2 You can avoid these pitfalls by putting plastic away for good. One way to get into the habit of using cash for everyday purchases is to set up a cash envelope system with one envelope for groceries, one for entertainment, etc.

3. Earn Extra Money. Start a part-time business or work a few hours a week at a second job to beef up a college savings or retirement savings account. Business opportunities, such as Primerica’s part- or full-time opportunity, are great ways to do something enjoyable while earning extra money each month.3 More information is available here: www.PrimericaBusinessOpportunity.com.

It was a match made in cyberspace when Florida student Kelly Hildebrandt typed her name into Facebook, an Internet social networking site. She thought it would be fun to see how many other people share her name. She never expected to find her future husband in the process. Kelly Hildebrandt, a tree trimmer and part time* Primerica representative from Texas was just as surprised to find out that someone else shared his exact name.

“Kelly contacted me at the end of April 2008,” recalls Kelly (guy). “We met face to face three months later when I flew to Florida to meet her in person. I’ll never forget that day!”

By the time they met in person, the duo had logged “hours and hours” of phone time and felt like they’d known each other for years. “My family went with me to the airport to meet him,” says Kelly. “I was really excited to see him!”

Seeing each other for the first time only confirmed they were meant to be. Kelly decided to leave Texas and move to Florida to focus on getting to know his future bride even better. In December 2008, they made it official. “I like to use a metal detector out on the beach,” says Kelly (guy). “Kelly and I were headed out to do some sunbathing and I convinced her to help me use the detector. Her sister had hidden a miniature treasure box with the engagement ring in it for us to ‘find.’”

Kelly (girl) said “yes” and the couple started planning their future together. One piece of the puzzle – the vehicle for reaching their goals and dreams – was already in place. Because of Primerica’s Business Opportunity, when Kelly (guy) left his home state, his business went with him. He recruited his fiancée and the pair started helping families in south Florida.

“I decided to join Kelly (guy) in the business because I know how important it is for spouses to support each other in all areas,” says Kelly. Her future husband continues, “We want to give other people the same opportunity to reach their goals and dreams. I am so blessed to be a part of this company. Because of Primerica I was able to move 1,600 miles to be with the girl of my dreams and still know that no matter where I am I can still impact peoples’ lives.”

The two Kellys, and their unique match up story, got national attention when the brother of Kelly (guy), also a Primerica representative, mentioned the details to a local broadcast journalist friend in Texas. The romantic story quickly spread, leading to interviews from, among others, the Today Show, the Early Show, Regis & Kelly, Inside Edition, Fox & Friends, the Tyra Banks Show as well as a story in both Cosmopolitan Magazine and People Magazine!

The Hildebrandts are looking forward to not only starting their new life together when they get married in October, but also a lifetime of building a successful future … and business together. “We are building a business together, a business that gives us great hope for our future together!” enthuses Kelly (guy).
